Transfer Data to New Android Phone — Complete Guide
Transfer all your data, apps, and settings to a new Android phone using multiple methods.
⚡ Quick Overview — Before You Start
Before transferring data, ensure your old phone is backed up and both phones are charged to at least 50%.
- On your old phone: Settings > System > Backup > Back Up Now
- Ensure both phones are connected to WiFi
- Charge both phones to at least 50%
- Have your Google account password ready
- If using a cable transfer, have a USB-C to USB-C cable (or USB-C to USB-A adapter)
📋 What Transfers vs What Doesn't
✅ Transfers Automatically
- Contacts
- Photos & videos (if backed up to Google Photos)
- App list (apps are re-downloaded)
- Call history
- SMS/MMS messages
- WiFi passwords
- Wallpaper & display settings
- Calendar events
❌ Requires Manual Setup
- App logins (you'll need to sign in again)
- Two-factor authentication apps (Google Authenticator, Authy)
- Banking & payment apps
- WhatsApp chat history (separate transfer needed)
- Downloaded music & podcasts
- Game progress (unless cloud-saved)
- Custom ringtones & notification sounds
Method 1: Google Backup & Restore (Recommended)
The simplest method — works for any Android-to-Android transfer. Your data is restored from Google's cloud during the new phone's initial setup.
Step 1: Back Up Your Old Phone
- Go to Settings > System > Backup (or Settings > Google > Backup)
- Ensure Back up to Google Drive is toggled on
- Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to complete
- Verify the backup includes apps, SMS, call history, and device settings
Step 2: Set Up Your New Phone
- Power on your new phone and follow the initial setup wizard
- Connect to WiFi when prompted
- When asked "Copy apps & data?", tap Next
- Choose "Can't use old phone" or "A backup from the cloud"
- Sign in with the same Google account used on your old phone
- Select the most recent backup
- Choose which apps and settings to restore
- Wait for the restore to complete — this may take 15–30 minutes depending on data size
Method 2: Direct Cable Transfer
The fastest and most reliable method. Connect both phones with a USB cable during the new phone's setup process.
- Power on your new phone and start the setup wizard
- When prompted to copy data, select "Use your old phone"
- Connect both phones with a USB-C to USB-C cable
- If your old phone has micro-USB, use a USB-C to USB-A adapter (often included with new phones)
- On your old phone, tap Allow when asked to trust the connection
- Select what to transfer: apps, contacts, photos, messages, etc.
- Wait for the transfer to complete — progress is shown on both screens
Method 3: Samsung Smart Switch
If your new phone is a Samsung Galaxy, Smart Switch is the most comprehensive transfer tool. It works with Android, iPhone, and even older Samsung phones.
Wireless Transfer
- Install Samsung Smart Switch on both phones (from Play Store)
- Open Smart Switch on both phones
- On the new Samsung: tap Receive Data
- On the old phone: tap Send Data
- Select Wireless and allow the connection
- Choose what to transfer and tap Transfer
USB Cable Transfer
- Connect both phones with a USB cable (USB-C to USB-C recommended)
- Open Smart Switch on the new Samsung phone
- It will detect the old phone automatically
- Select data to transfer and proceed — cable is significantly faster than wireless
Transfer via PC/Mac
- Download Smart Switch for PC/Mac from samsung.com/smartswitch
- Connect your old phone and create a backup on the computer
- Connect your new Samsung and restore from the backup
- This method is useful if you want to keep a permanent backup on your computer
Method 4: Transfer WhatsApp Chat History
WhatsApp chats don't transfer automatically with Google Backup. You need to use WhatsApp's built-in Google Drive backup feature.
Android to Android
- On your old phone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup
- Tap Back Up to Google Drive and select a backup frequency
- Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to complete
- Ensure the backup includes videos if you want them (this uses more Google Drive storage)
- On your new phone, install WhatsApp and verify your phone number
- WhatsApp will detect the Google Drive backup and offer to restore it
- Tap Restore and wait for all messages and media to download
Coming from iPhone
- On your iPhone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Move Chats to Android
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect both phones via cable
- The transfer happens during your new Android phone's initial setup
Method 5: SIM Card & eSIM Transfer
Physical SIM Card
- Power off both phones
- Use the SIM eject tool (or a paperclip) to remove the SIM tray from your old phone
- Insert the SIM card into your new phone's SIM tray
- If the SIM sizes differ (nano vs micro), contact your carrier for a replacement SIM
eSIM Transfer
- On your new phone, go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add eSIM
- Select Transfer from nearby phone if both phones support eSIM transfer
- Alternatively, contact your carrier to deactivate the eSIM on your old phone and activate it on your new one
- Some carriers allow eSIM transfer via their app or website
Post-Transfer Checklist
After transferring, work through this checklist to ensure everything is set up correctly:
- Sign into apps: Open each important app and sign in — banking, email, social media
- Set up 2FA: Re-configure two-factor authentication for all accounts
- Check contacts: Open Contacts and verify your important contacts transferred
- Test calls & texts: Make a test call and send a text to confirm your SIM is working
- Check photos: Open Google Photos and verify your photo library is accessible
- Re-download music: Open Spotify, YouTube Music, etc. and download offline playlists
- Set up payment: Add cards to Google Wallet if you use contactless payments
- Configure biometrics: Set up fingerprint and/or face unlock
- Update all apps: Open Play Store > tap your profile > Manage Apps > Update All
- Back up the new phone: Go to Settings > System > Backup and ensure backup is enabled
Switching from iPhone to Android
Switching from iOS requires a few extra steps:
- Deregister iMessage: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > toggle off iMessage. If you've already switched, visit selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage to deregister your number
- Disable FaceTime: Go to Settings > FaceTime > toggle off
- Transfer via cable: During Android setup, connect your iPhone with a USB-C to Lightning cable when prompted
- Google Drive backup: Install Google Drive on your iPhone first, then use it to back up contacts, calendar, and photos
- WhatsApp: Use the built-in "Move to Android" feature (see Method 4 above)
Tips for a Smooth Transfer
- Keep your old phone active and charged during the entire transfer process
- Use a cable transfer for large photo/video libraries — it's much faster than wireless
- Don't factory reset your old phone until you've verified everything transferred successfully
- Write down app-specific passwords before starting (especially for apps that don't support cloud backup)
- If you use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, LastPass), ensure it's set up on the new phone first — it makes signing into all your apps much easier
- Keep your old phone for at least a week after transferring, in case you discover missing data
When to Seek Help
- Old phone won't turn on — a repair shop may be able to extract data via USB or chip-level recovery
- Google backup not appearing — ensure you're signing in with the exact same Google account. Check at drive.google.com > Storage > Backups
- Carrier/SIM issues — visit your carrier's shop if the SIM isn't activating on the new phone
- Enterprise/work apps — contact your IT department for MDM (Mobile Device Management) re-enrolment
