OnePlus Common Problems — Fix Guide
Fix common OnePlus phone problems including OxygenOS/ColorOS issues, battery drain, notification delays, and display problems.
⚡ Quick Fix — Restart & Clear Cache
Most OnePlus issues resolve with a quick restart and cache clear. Try this first before deeper troubleshooting.
- Hold the Power button for 3 seconds and tap Restart
- Go to Settings > Apps > App Management
- Tap the three-dot menu > Show System Processes
- Select the problematic app > Storage & Cache > Clear Cache
- Test whether the issue persists
Method 1: Fix Battery Optimisation & App Killing
OnePlus devices are notorious for aggressive battery management that kills background apps, causing missed notifications and poor app performance.
Disable Battery Optimisation Per App
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery Optimisation
- Tap the dropdown at the top and select All Apps
- Find the app you want to protect (e.g. WhatsApp, email)
- Tap it and select Don't Optimise
- Repeat for each important app
Enable Auto-Launch
- Go to Settings > Apps > App Management
- Select the app > tap Auto-Launch
- Toggle Allow Auto-Launch on
- This prevents the system from stopping the app when you close it
OxygenOS 14+ / ColorOS Settings
- Go to Settings > Battery > More Battery Settings
- Toggle off Sleep Standby Optimisation if notifications are delayed overnight
- Check Optimised Charging — this delays charging to 100% based on your habits
Method 2: Fix Notification Delays
If notifications arrive late or only when you open the app, OnePlus battery management is almost certainly the cause. Follow these steps in addition to Method 1.
- Go to Settings > Notifications & Status Bar
- Ensure the app has Allow Notifications enabled
- Tap into the app and enable Priority or Urgent delivery
- Go to Settings > Apps > App Management > [App] > Battery Usage
- Select Allow Background Activity
- Ensure Auto-Launch is enabled (see Method 1)
Lock App in Recent Apps
- Open the app, then go to your Recent Apps screen
- Tap the three-dot menu on the app card (or long-press on older OxygenOS)
- Select Lock — this prevents the system from clearing it
Method 3: Fix Display Tint & Colour Issues
OnePlus AMOLED screens can sometimes show a green tint at low brightness, uneven colour, or excessive warmth. Here's how to calibrate.
- Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Screen Calibration
- Try switching between Vivid, Gentle, and Cinematic modes
- In Vivid mode, use the colour temperature slider to adjust warmth
- For advanced control, tap Advanced Settings to tweak individual colour channels
Fix Green Tint at Low Brightness
- Go to Settings > Display & Brightness
- Toggle off DC Dimming if available — this can cause tint at low brightness
- Check for a software update — OnePlus has released tint fixes via OTA updates
- If the tint is severe and consistent, contact OnePlus support — it may be a hardware defect covered under warranty
Refresh Rate Settings
- Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Screen Refresh Rate
- Select Standard (60Hz) to save battery, or High (120Hz) for smoothness
- If the screen flickers, try switching between these modes and restarting
Method 4: Fix Aggressive RAM Clearing
OnePlus devices often close background apps too aggressively, causing apps to reload every time you switch. This is a RAM management issue.
- Enable Developer Options: go to Settings > About Phone and tap Build Number 7 times
- Go to Settings > System Settings > Developer Options
- Find Don't Keep Activities — ensure this is OFF (turning it on kills apps immediately)
- Find Background Process Limit — set to Standard Limit (not a lower number)
RAM Expansion (Virtual RAM)
- Go to Settings > About Phone > RAM
- If your device supports it, enable RAM Expansion
- Select the amount of storage to use as virtual RAM (2-5 GB recommended)
- Restart your phone for the change to take effect
Method 5: Fix Fingerprint Scanner Reliability
In-display fingerprint scanners on OnePlus devices can become unreliable over time. Here's how to improve recognition accuracy.
- Go to Settings > Security & Lock Screen > Fingerprint
- Delete all existing fingerprints
- Re-register your primary finger — press firmly and cover the entire sensor area
- Pro tip: Register the same finger twice as two separate entries — this dramatically improves recognition
- When registering, scan the edges and tip of your finger, not just the centre
Screen Protector Considerations
- Tempered glass protectors can interfere with optical fingerprint sensors
- If you've applied a new screen protector, re-register your fingerprints
- Use a screen protector specifically designed for in-display fingerprint compatibility
- Go to Settings > Display > Touch Sensitivity — if available, enable increased sensitivity
Method 6: Fix WiFi Disconnection & Network Issues
Some OnePlus users experience WiFi dropping, slow mobile data, or frequent disconnections. This is often caused by battery optimisation affecting network components.
- Go to Settings > WiFi & Network > WiFi
- Long-press your network > Forget, then reconnect
- Go to Settings > System Settings > Reset & Erase > Reset WiFi, Mobile & Bluetooth
- Restart your phone after the reset
Prevent WiFi from Dropping During Sleep
- Go to Settings > WiFi & Network > WiFi > Advanced (or three-dot menu)
- Set Keep WiFi on during sleep to Always
- Disable Intelligent Network Switch (this auto-switches between WiFi and mobile data)
- In Developer Options, enable WiFi Scan Throttling to reduce connection drops
Bonus: Alert Slider Customisation
The physical alert slider is a signature OnePlus feature. Here's how to customise what each position does.
- Go to Settings > Sound & Vibration > Alert Slider (or Settings > Buttons & Gestures > Alert Slider)
- The three positions are: Silent (bottom), Vibrate (middle), Ring (top)
- Customise vibration patterns and notification behaviour for each mode
- If the slider feels loose or isn't registering correctly, try a restart — a software glitch can cause the wrong mode to activate
Why OnePlus Devices Have These Issues
- Aggressive battery management — OxygenOS/ColorOS prioritises battery life by killing background apps more aggressively than stock Android, causing missed notifications and app reloads
- OxygenOS to ColorOS transition — since OnePlus merged with OPPO, the software has shifted from near-stock OxygenOS to ColorOS-based builds, introducing new settings paths and behaviours
- AMOLED display characteristics — green tint at low brightness and colour uniformity issues are inherent to some AMOLED panels, particularly at very low brightness levels
- In-display fingerprint sensors — optical sensors are affected by screen protectors, moisture, and registration quality more than capacitive rear sensors
- Software updates — major OxygenOS updates occasionally introduce regressions in WiFi stability, battery life, or app compatibility
Prevention Tips
- After every major OxygenOS/ColorOS update, re-check your battery optimisation and auto-launch settings — updates can reset them
- Lock essential apps (WhatsApp, email, messaging) in the recent apps menu immediately after setup
- Register fingerprints twice and re-register them after applying a new screen protector
- Keep at least 15% storage free for smooth performance
- Check the OnePlus Community forums before installing major updates to see if other users report issues
- Use Settings > System Settings > System Update > Check for Updates regularly for bug-fix patches
When to Seek Professional Help
- Persistent green/pink tint that doesn't change with display settings — likely a hardware panel defect
- Fingerprint sensor completely unresponsive after re-registration — possible sensor hardware failure
- Phone overheating during normal use (not gaming/charging) — possible battery degradation
- WiFi hardware greyed out and cannot be toggled on — WiFi chip failure
- Alert slider physically broken — requires physical repair
Contact OnePlus support at oneplus.com/support or visit an authorised service centre. OnePlus devices typically have a 12–24 month warranty depending on your region.
