Signs Your Phone May Be Compromised
Diagnostic
Check for these warning signs. If you recognise 3 or more, your phone is likely compromised:
- •Unexpected data usage — check Settings > Network > Data Usage for unexplained spikes
- •Unfamiliar apps installed — apps you didn't download appearing on your phone
- •Persistent pop-ups — ads or notifications appearing even when no apps are open
- •Rapid battery drain — malware running in the background consumes battery
- •Phone overheating — background processes from malware generate heat
- •Changed settings — passwords, lock screen, or account settings altered without your input
- •Password reset emails you didn't request — someone is trying to take over your accounts
- •Friends receiving spam from your accounts — your messaging accounts have been hijacked
Method 1: Remove Unknown Device Admin Apps
5 minutes
90% Success
Malware often grants itself Device Admin privileges which prevents normal uninstallation. You must revoke these first.
- 1Go to Settings > Security > Device Admin Apps (or Settings > Biometrics and Security > Other Security Settings > Device Admin Apps on Samsung)
- 2Review the list — you should only see Find My Device and possibly your company's MDM app
- 3Deactivate any apps you don't recognise
- 4Now go to Settings > Apps and uninstall those same apps
Method 2: Audit App Permissions
10 minutes
85% Success
Malicious apps request excessive permissions to spy on you. Review what each app can access.
- 1Go to Settings > Privacy > Permission Manager
- 2Check Camera — revoke access for any app that shouldn't need it
- 3Check Microphone — same as above
- 4Check Location — limit to "While using the app" or deny entirely for suspicious apps
- 5Check SMS and Phone — very few apps legitimately need these
- 6Check Accessibility access — malware abuses this to control your phone. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Installed Services
Method 3: Scan with Google Play Protect
5 minutes
75% Success
- 1Open Google Play Store > tap your profile icon > Play Protect
- 2Tap Scan to run a full device scan
- 3Follow any recommendations to remove harmful apps
- 4Ensure "Scan apps with Play Protect" is toggled ON for ongoing protection
- 5Also check Settings > Apps > Special App Access > Install Unknown Apps — disable all entries
Method 4: Secure Your Google Account
10 minutes
95% Success
⚠️ Do this from a DIFFERENT device — not the compromised phone. Use a computer or another phone you trust.
- 1Go to myaccount.google.com/security on a trusted device
- 2Change your Google password to something completely new and strong
- 3Enable 2-Step Verification if not already enabled
- 4Review "Your devices" and sign out of any devices you don't recognise
- 5Check "Third-party apps with account access" and revoke anything suspicious
- 6Change passwords for all other accounts (email, banking, social media) from the trusted device
Method 5: Factory Reset (Recommended for Confirmed Hacks)
20 minutes
99% Success
⚠️ Do NOT restore from a backup after resetting. The backup may contain the malware. Set up the phone as a completely new device and reinstall apps manually from the Play Store.
- 1Back up only photos and contacts to Google (these are safe to restore later)
- 2Go to Settings > General Management > Reset > Factory Data Reset
- 3Confirm and wait for the reset to complete
- 4Set up as a new device — do NOT restore apps from backup
- 5Reinstall apps one by one from the Play Store only
- 6Set up new passwords and 2FA for all accounts using the freshly reset phone
🛡️ How to Prevent Future Hacks
- ✓Only install apps from the Google Play Store — never sideload APKs from websites
- ✓Enable 2-factor authentication on all accounts (Google, email, banking, social media)
- ✓Keep Android and all apps updated — updates patch security vulnerabilities
- ✓Don't click links in unexpected texts, emails, or social media messages
- ✓Use strong, unique passwords for each account — consider a password manager
- ✓Review app permissions regularly and revoke unnecessary access
- ✓Avoid public Wi-Fi for banking or entering passwords — use mobile data instead
When to Contact Authorities
🚔 Report to Authorities If:
- •Financial accounts show unauthorised transactions — contact your bank immediately
- •Identity theft is suspected — report to Action Fraud (UK) or your local equivalent
- •Corporate or work device was compromised — notify your IT department immediately
- •You're receiving threatening messages or extortion demands
- •Suspicious activity persists after a factory reset — may indicate hardware-level compromise
